BIG DEAL: Weekends in New York City from $139/nt in July and August

Do the greatest city on the smallest budget.

Summer—particularly towards the end—is typically New York’s quiet time. Come August, you’ll find even the most city-centric locals clambering for the nearest bridge or tunnel. Offices end up almost eerily quiet, restaurants start being polite to walk-ins, the most affluent neighborhoods can feel all but abandoned. It’s quite the change of pace, to say the least.

Typically, for each subway seat and rush-hour taxi relinquished by a local, there’s a visitor standing by to take their place. Hotel rates can be a little softer on weekends, but waves of travelers (many of them European) can keep them from coming too close to earth. This summer so far, however, draw your own conclusions, we’ve found terrific deals nearly every weekend, a trend that seems to be holding at least up until Labor Day. Long story short: This is the perfect time for a weekend getaway to New York, where you’ll find the city more visitor-friendly than ever.

From a transformed Downtown to the rustic chic of the NoMad district to the now-completed High Line and the better-than-ever Brooklyn Bridge Park, there’s so much to delve into right now, stuff that probably wasn’t even a thing, the last time you were here.

Ready to go? Here’s a list of the best value—that’s the best hotel at the best price, you can certainly go cheaper—we found for each remaining summer weekend. On most weekends, there’s plenty more bargains where these came from.

All prices given are the average nightly rate before tax for a two-night—Friday and Saturday—stay. It’s worth remembering, however, that for many New York City hotels, the softest rates of the week are typically found on Sunday night. Just in case you’re tempted to stay longer.
